I know I have a lot of friends who sell those aesthetic wraps. I’m not trying to create enemies but I want to explain the science behind how this works. I’ve never had one single person who peddles these give me a clear answer as far as any science that is behind the product. I’ve always asked even though I already knew how these “wraps” do their thing.
You don’t have to look further than the directions on the Web site of one of their independent distributors.
“For the next 72 hours (3 days) drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water each day!! This is imperative for the wraps to work. If you weigh 200 lbs drink 100 oz of water each day. That’s 5 or so bottles (depending on the oz in each bottle). Personally, right when I get up a drink a big cup of water. Try it! Your body will love you for it ? You must drink the water!”
So for 3 days, you’re going to increase your hydration levels to a point they should be at anyway. At 100 ounces, you’re 28 ounces shy of a full gallon – the same mark I try to get my clients to consume. There is a hormone in the body known as vasopressin. Vasopressin regulates water retention/urination (among other things). There is a direct correlation to being dehydrated and water being retained in your fat cells.
When your water consumption is bountiful, you release the water in your fat cells and you will appear leaner and even weigh less. When you are not consuming enough water, the body goes into a conservation mode in an attempt to maintain some sort of homeostasis and osmotic balance. At that point you are holding water.
It’s not the makeup of the wraps themselves that causes you to appear a bit leaner. Instead, it’s the fact that you’re encouraged to consume a half ounce of water for every pound that you weigh. You’re allowing the body to seek a reduction in water retention and will ultimately appear leaner. You’re also detoxifying the body this way, which they say is one of the positive byproducts of using the wraps.
Instead of purchasing costly wraps that only seem to be a bandaid and try to correct the problem. Nutrition, activity and hydration are more viable options.
